Crowdsourcing for science : understanding and enhancing

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Recent years have seen an increase in the number of citizen science initiatives, which harness the contribution from large numbers of volunteers to support a scientific project, much like other internet-based crowdsourcing applications. In some cases, citizen science projects are based on volunteer computing, where people contribute their computer resources to the project (rather than contributing their manual effort). The most notable example of these projects is SETI@home, where contributors allocate their personal computing resources to be used for detecting intelligent life outside Earth. Other citizen science initiatives, on the other hand, rely on the manual effort of contributors, for example Galaxy Zoo, a web-based distributed analysis project where contributors classify images of galaxies, or the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP) where volunteers monitor the environment and contribute weather data. Common to all these initiatives is the use of the internet as the primary platform for enabling distributed, volunteered, citizen science contribution. These initiatives represent a paradigm shift in scientific research, reducing substantially operating costs and increasing the involvement of the general public. We term this new breed of internet-based citizen science ‘Science Sourcing’, or simply ‘SciSourcing’. In this workshop position paper we briefly review the field, identify gaps in the current literature, introduce our own research program in this area, and describe preliminary results from two recent empirical studies.

The Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium is a global team science effort, now including over 800 scientists spread across 340 institutions in 35 countries, with the shared goal of understanding disease and genetic influences on the brain. This "crowdsourcing" approach to team neuroscience has unprecedented power for advancing our understanding of both typica...

For data mining studies, because of the complexity of doing feature selection process in tasks by hand, we need to send some of labeling to the workers with crowdsourcing activities. The process of outsourcing data mining tasks to users is often handled by software systems without enough knowledge of the age or geography of the users' residence. Uncertainty about the performance of virtual user...
متن کاملUnderstanding Workers, Developing Effective Tasks, and Enhancing Marketplace Dynamics: A Study of a Large Crowdsourcing Marketplace
We conduct an experimental analysis of a dataset comprising over 27 million microtasks performed by over 70,000 workers issued to a large crowdsourcing marketplace between 2012-2016. Using this data—never before analyzed in an academic context—we shed light on three crucial aspects of crowdsourcing: (1) Task design — helping requesters understand what constitutes an effective task, and how to g...
متن کاملCommunity-as-a-Service: Data Validation in Citizen Science
Currently, most citizen science projects that adopt a crowdsourcing model focus primarily on collecting and analyzing data. As yet, few of them leverage community interactions for effective data validation yet, which would have significant impact on improving the quality of the increasing volume of citizen science data. In this paper, we introduce an exploratory pilot study focused on understan...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Crowdsourcing: Theoretical Problems in Human Computation
What does theoretical computer science have to say about human computation? We identify three problems at the intersection of crowdsourcing, operations research, and theoretical computer science whose solution would have a major impact on the design, evaluation, and construction of real crowdsourcing systems. In some cases, these problems can let us sidestep apparently difficult HCI challenges ...
